A perfume test strip looks like the simplest object in the entire fragrance-buying process, a thin strip of paper, spray, sniff, done. But the material, thickness, and shape of that strip actually change what you smell, and a poor-quality strip can genuinely distort how a fragrance reads before it ever touches your skin.

Quality matters because scented, glossy, or low-absorbency paper interferes with how a fragrance reads: printer paper absorbs unevenly and can carry a faint chemical smell of its own, while cotton swabs hold fragrance well but release it too slowly and unevenly to give an accurate first impression. A real mouillette strip is inexpensive, sold in bulk, and worth using over any household substitute if you're testing seriously. That said, paper of any kind only tells you about the fragrance's evaporation pattern in isolation; it's still not a substitute for a skin test before buying, since paper doesn't interact with body chemistry the way skin does.
What actually makes a good test strip
A test strip's only job is to let a fragrance evaporate and release its notes without interfering with what you're smelling. A few specific properties determine whether it does that well.
Unscented, uncoated paper. This is the single most important quality. Regular printer paper, cardstock, or anything with a glossy or treated finish either carries its own faint smell or absorbs fragrance unevenly, both of which distort the test. Genuine blotter paper is made specifically to be neutral.
High absorbency with an even fiber structure. Good blotter paper pulls fragrance up through capillary action evenly across the strip, which lets it evaporate in the same layered pattern, top notes first, then heart, then base, that you'd expect on skin. Cheap or dense paper absorbs unevenly, creating patches that dry at different rates and muddy the impression.
Appropriate width and length. Most professional strips are narrow, around a third of an inch to half an inch wide, and 4 to 6 inches long. The narrow width limits how much fragrance the strip actually absorbs per spray, which prevents an overwhelming blast that makes it hard to judge subtlety, while the length keeps your fingers away from the sprayed section.
A folded or tapered end for holding. Many professional mouillettes have one end folded over or slightly widened, giving you something to hold or a way to hook the strip over the edge of a glass without touching the scented portion.
Mouillette: the industry-standard strip
The word mouillette comes from the French fragrance industry and refers specifically to the thin, unscented paper strips used by perfumers and retailers to test fragrance before it reaches skin. They're sometimes still called "smelling strips" or "blotter strips" in English, but mouillette is the precise professional term.
What sets a real mouillette apart from generic paper isn't complicated, it's controlled, consistent paper stock manufactured specifically for scent testing, with no bleaches, dyes, or coatings that could interfere with an accurate read. Fragrance houses, perfumers, and serious retailers use them because a strip that behaves consistently, batch after batch, is the only way to fairly compare multiple fragrances side by side.
They're also genuinely inexpensive at any real quantity, which is part of why they're the industry default rather than a premium accessory: a box of a few hundred professional-grade strips typically costs only marginally more than an equivalent stack of ordinary paper cut into strips by hand.
This isn't an informal preference; it's standard practice across the industry. Common substitutes and how they actually compare
Printer or copy paper, cut into strips. The most common DIY substitute, and the weakest one. Standard printer paper is treated with brighteners and coatings during manufacturing that can carry a faint chemical smell, and its fiber structure absorbs less evenly than true blotter paper, which distorts how notes develop. It works in a pinch, but it's a genuine downgrade from a real mouillette.
Cotton swabs or cotton balls. Cotton holds a surprisingly large amount of fragrance and releases it slowly, which sounds useful but actually works against a fair test: the slow release means the strip keeps "outgassing" fragrance well past the normal top-note window, making it harder to judge the natural fade of the opening in real time.
Coffee filter paper. A reasonable emergency substitute, since it's unbleached, thin, and reasonably neutral in most cases, though quality and thickness vary widely between brands, which makes it an inconsistent choice for comparing multiple fragrances against each other.
Business cards or thick cardstock. Poor absorbency and often a printed or coated surface make these one of the worst common substitutes. They tend to leave fragrance sitting on the surface rather than absorbing it, which changes both the intensity and the evaporation pattern significantly.
If a real mouillette isn't available, coffee filter paper cut into strips is the most reasonable stand-in among common household items. Printer paper and cardstock are usable only as a last resort.
How to use a test strip correctly
Even the best strip gives a poor read if it's used the wrong way.
- Hold the strip a few inches from the sprayer, not touching it, and spray once directly onto the paper. Spraying too close over-saturates a small area rather than giving an even application.
- Label each strip immediately if you're testing more than one fragrance. A pencil note at the folded end, since ink can add its own faint smell, prevents mixing up which strip is which once several are in rotation.
- Wave the strip gently through the air rather than holding it still directly under your nose. This lets the fragrance diffuse naturally rather than delivering an overwhelming, concentrated blast that makes subtle notes harder to detect.
- Give it the same staged waiting period as a skin test. Smell it immediately for the opening, again at 10 to 15 minutes for the early development, and once more later for a sense of how the base notes read on paper, even though paper won't carry the base notes as accurately or as long as skin will.
- Store used strips separately and don't reuse them for a different fragrance. A strip that's already carrying one scent will contaminate the read of a second fragrance sprayed onto it.
Where paper testing still falls short
However good the strip, paper testing has a structural limit that no material fixes: it doesn't interact with skin chemistry, body warmth, or individual oils, all of which meaningfully change how a fragrance develops and smells on a real person. A great mouillette gives you an accurate picture of the fragrance in isolation, evaporating on its own, which is genuinely useful for quickly narrowing down options. It does not tell you how that fragrance will actually smell on you three hours into wear.

What retailers should know about blotter quality
For anyone running a fragrance counter or an online sample program, blotter quality is a small cost with an outsized effect on customer confidence.
- Buy real mouillette strips in bulk rather than cutting printer paper. The per-strip cost difference is small at volume, and a customer who gets an inaccurate first impression from cheap paper is less likely to trust the recommendation or come back.
- Keep strips in a sealed, unscented container, not loose in a drawer near other retail products, since ambient scent contamination from packaging, cleaning products, or nearby stock can transfer onto stored strips over time.
- Provide fresh strips per customer, per fragrance, rather than reusing a communal supply, both for hygiene and for testing accuracy.
- Pair strips with an explanation, not just the paper. A brief note that paper only shows the opening, and that a proper decision needs a skin test over a few hours, sets honest expectations and reduces post-purchase disappointment and returns.
