Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle was founded in 2000 by Frédéric Malle, whom the house calls a perfume publisher. The name is a tribute to "les nouvelles éditions de films", the company his father created for his uncle, the film director Louis Malle.
The idea is in the name. The house treats perfumers as authors: it gives them creative freedom and puts their names on the bottles, which it says brought perfumers out of the shadows and into the spotlight.
