What sets Byredo apart from other niche houses?
Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham. The house says it was born from a desire to translate memories and emotions into objects and experiences, and calls its approach to creativity sensorial-led.
Three things on the house's own account set it apart from most niche peers.
The first is where a Byredo perfume starts. The house builds its work around memories and cultural references, which it calls a living library of collective memories, and aims for pieces that are both personal and universal.
The second is how each creation is made. The house says each one is conceived with uncompromising attention to raw materials, form and storytelling, and places its design in the tension between Scandinavian minimalism and bold artistic expression.
The third is breadth. Byredo works across fragrance, makeup, home and crafted accessories. Within fragrance alone it makes eau de parfum, Absolu de Parfum versions of six of its perfumes, and the Night Veils perfume extracts, which it describes as intensely concentrated fragrances distilled into a pure essence.

What does a first Byredo order usually include?
Wide and shallow, led by the names customers already know.
Gypsy Water, Bal d'Afrique, Mojave Ghost and Blanche are the natural anchors. The house lists all four among its best sellers, and a first order without them leaves the shelf without its best-known names. From there, add one or two of the Absolu de Parfum versions for customers who want a deeper take on a scent they already wear, and one or two names from the wider range, such as Black Saffron or Eleventh Hour.
Leave the perfume extracts and the quieter names until you have sell-through data. They suit collectors well and move more slowly with everyone else, which is fine once you know which customers you have.
