What sets Penhaligon's apart from other niche houses?
Penhaligon's is a British perfumer that dates itself to 1870. On the house's own account, William Penhaligon, born in Penzance in 1837, took over a barbershop on London's Jermyn Street and expanded it with his own shop front.
The house dates its first fragrance, Hammam Bouquet, to 1872, and it stopped being a hairdresser in 1949 to become purely a perfumery. That barbering and grooming history still shows in classics such as Endymion, which the house describes as an eau de cologne built on bergamot, suede and geranium.
The newer ranges take a different direction. The Portraits give each fragrance a character, from The Blazing Mister Sam, which the house describes as hot and cold spices over cedar and patchouli, to Changing Constance. Halfeti, which the house describes as heady with rose, grapefruit and spice, leads a range of richer, more eastern-inspired scents alongside Empressa and Babylon.
