What sets Matière Première apart from other niche houses?
Matière Première's story starts in a field. Perfumer Aurélien Guichard founded an organic, Ecocert-certified estate in his native Grasse, and the house says its rose fields there fuelled the idea of a perfume house built to showcase the raw beauty of natural raw materials.
Three things on the house's own account set it apart from most niche peers.
The first is the rose. The estate holds more than 15,000 rose bushes. The roses are harvested every May for 30 days, picked each morning and taken straight to a neighbouring factory to make Centifolia Rose Absolute, which sits at the heart of Radical Rose in what the house calls an extreme dosage.
The second is the tuberose. The house's tuberose field now holds more than 50,000 bulbs, and its flowers produce the Tuberose Absolute and enfleurage at the heart of French Flower. Guichard says he composed French Flower from an overdose of French tuberose, inspired by the scent of the field at night.
The third is the lavandin. More than 10,000 lavandin bushes on the family estate are tended by hand, without pesticides, and distilled each July. That oil is worked in overdose in Metal Lavender, alongside an organic lavender absolute from Haute-Provence.
Do I need brand authorisation to sell Matière Première?
No. Access to our Matière Première stock depends on your trade account with us, not on an appointment from the house. Resale rules vary by country, so check the position in your market before you list. What is not acceptable anywhere is presenting yourself as an official Matière Première distributor when you are not one.
What does a first Matière Première order usually include?
Wide and shallow, led by the house's best-known raw materials.
Radical Rose and French Flower are natural anchors, because they are built on flowers from the house's own fields. Add Vanilla Powder and Falcon Leather, which the house also makes as extraits and as hair mists, and one of the fresher eau de parfums, such as Neroli Oranger or Cologne Cédrat, to round out the shelf.
Leave the extraits and the quieter names until you have sell-through data. They suit collectors well and move more slowly with everyone else, which is fine once you know which customers you have.
